'Ello, and welcome to the first top ten list, featuring everyone's favorite topic: studying and getting your homework done. *insert canned laugh track from a 1950s sitcom*
Despite the unfortunately familiar feelings of overwhelmed-ness and stress that tend to accompany thoughts of homework, the right location for getting your work done can make all the difference. Let's chat about the top ten study spots on campus, ranked in order of our favorites.
10. Assorted Work Desks (MCT 1st and 2nd floors)
One finds these work desks located on several floors of MCT.… They are simple; what you see is what you get. There is however an alluring quality to the simplicity. No real surprises. Sturdy chairs, medium-sized workspace, and moderate seclusion, except during class changes, make these a reliable go-to. It is however a no-frills option, just barely making it into the top ten.
9. Lehman Library
Ahhh the library. Comfy chairs, check. Computers, check. Coffee??? CHECK! This place seemingly has it all: a section for quiet, a basement for noise; however, it has quite high foot traffic and is often crowded due to its notoriety. This is perhaps the most obvious place to study at and because of this, it only makes nine on our list.
8. Commuter Lounge (CUB 209)
The commuter lounge: located on the top floor of the CUB and guarded by a passcode only commuters know! How exciting is the exclusivity of being a commuter? I’ll tell you. Mildly exciting. This room has wonderful seating arrangements and options as well as a kitchen, Keurig and K-cups, AND computers. It is unfortunately on the TOP floor of the CUB… that is a mild hike. It is also generally full of people. Though very quiet, one has the perfect opportunity to socialize with other commuters. Solid, versatile choice.
7. McFeely's (CUB 0th floor)
If you don’t know where McFeely’s lounge is, you need to actually go inside the CUB once. It is near the RedZone on the first floor. This spot has a cafe-style vibe and soft-lighting which some may find quite relaxing… perfect for getting homework done! Despite the relatively high foot traffic not far from this location, the unique atmosphere pulls McFeely’s into the top 10.
6. First-Year Experience Lounge (CUB 2nd floor)
Despite a sometimes arduous trip up two flights of stairs, the First-Year Experience Lounge is a great place to hunker down and get some work done on the top floor of the CUB. Of all our favorite study spots, this one boasts the most well-adapted social distancing space, with plexiglass propped up between each workstation. There are also computers, so it’s great for those days when you want to lighten your backpack by leaving your laptop at home. Note: we’re not sure if this space is solely for first-year students, so to all upperclassmen, study at your own risk. ;)
5. Fish Bowl (MCT 0th floor)
Note: beware the time of day you come to get your study on, because the Metal Door of Doom descends at some point in the early evening.
Nicknamed for its iconic all-glass front wall, the Fish Bowl is a great study space right off the lobby of MCT. Occasionally, the temperature can get less than desirable in the lower room due to the uninsulated window/wall. But between the endearing view of the front flower-beds, the quieter upper level with a cozy counter to work at, and the handy-dandy vending machines and microwave, there’s lots to like about this study spot. And it’s especially lovely during snowstorms and on rainy days. :)
4. Stained Glass Lounge (CUB 2L3)
Tucked away on the top floor of the CUB (near the Slate’s office, for reference) is a gorgeous stained-glass-trimmed study lounge featuring five (count ‘em, five) comfy chairs. This is probably the most ideal study spot for some deep reading of textbooks, since you’ve got a well-cushioned chair to sit in, the cozy colorful glass framing the space, and a stunning overlook view of campus through the large window. With all these features, this study spot will be your new favorite place to pore over your notes.
3. The Rocks
O’ the great outdoors. We all know the feeling of being cooped up inside, especially nowadays. So if you’re looking for a bit of fresh air & green scenery, getting outside to study can be a really refreshing experience. One of our favorite spots to voyage to for an outdoor study session is the patch of big rocks past the pavilion near the sand volleyball courts (or, behind the big commuter lot by Luhrs, if you’re more familiar with that landmark). Its only flaw is occasionally patchy WiFi, but overall it’s a magically unpopulated and scenic location, which is why it’s in our top three.
2. Tech Outlet Nook (CUB 118)
This hidden gem can be found tucked in a corner of the middle floor of the CUB. With very limited seating space, this is a perfect spot to focus and do some deep work! Also, it has the fun swivel chairs if you’re into that. Because it is so secluded, there is very little foot traffic which propels this unique study spot to the second on our list.
1. The Project Center (CUB 2nd floor)
The pyramids at Giza. The hanging gardens of Babylon. The hidden city of Atlantis. These pale in comparison to the great wonder that is The Project Center. Okay, we might be dramatizing a little; but can you blame us? Between the spacious countertop, the comfy swivel barstools, and its beautifully out-of-the-way location, this spot practically sends you a calligraphy-scrawled invitation to do your homework within its walls. Located right off the First-Year Experience Lounge, this little corner of the CUB is the ultimate secluded spot to nestle in for maximum productivity.
